Description

Artemisia vulgaris, commonly referred to as Common Mugwort, is a distinctive perennial herb that belongs to the Asteraceae family. Native to Europe and Asia, it has made its home in various parts of North America and other regions. This hardy plant is known for its unique appearance, historical uses, and cultural significance. The Common Mugwort plant typically reaches a height of 2 to 4 feet (60 to 120 cm) and forms a clump of erect stems. Its leaves are deeply lobed and have a grayish-green color with a distinct silvery underside, giving the plant a two-toned appearance. When crushed or brushed against, the leaves emit a strong and pleasant aromatic fragrance that is reminiscent of sage.  Zones 4-8

Germination

To germinate Artemisia vulgaris seeds, start by preparing a seed starting tray or small pots filled with a well-draining seed starting mix, such as a combination of peat moss and perlite. Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil and lightly press them into the soil with your fingertips. Since Artemisia vulgaris seeds require light for germination, avoid covering them with additional soil. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged by misting regularly or using a gentle watering can. Place the tray or pots in a warm location with indirect sunlight, maintaining a temperature between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Germination typically occurs within 7-21 days. Once the seedlings emerge, provide adequate spacing if growing in trays, or transplant them into individual pots when they have developed a few sets of true leaves. Artemisia vulgaris prefers well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. Continue to care for the seedlings with proper watering and light as they grow into mature Artemisia vulgaris plants.
