Description

Miscanthus sinensis Yakushima, commonly known as Yakushima Dwarf Maiden Grass, is an enchanting ornamental grass known for its compact and graceful appearance. This deciduous grass is a cultivar of the larger Miscanthus sinensis species and typically reaches heights of 2 to 4 feet, making it an ideal choice for smaller garden spaces or as a foreground plant in larger landscapes. Its slender, arching foliage features narrow green blades with white midribs, creating a striking variegated effect. In late summer to early fall, Yakushima produces plume-like, feathery pinkish-silver flowerheads that rise above the foliage, adding an elegant touch to the landscape. This cultivar is drought-tolerant, low-maintenance, and deer-resistant, making it a popular choice for landscaping. Yakushima adds texture, color, and a sense of movement to gardens and is often used in borders, rock gardens, or as a focal point, providing year-round interest and a touch of elegance to outdoor spaces.  Zones 5-9

Germination

Miscanthus sinensis Yakushima . Begin by sowing the seeds in a seed tray or pots filled with a well-draining potting mix. Lightly press the seeds into the surface of the soil, but do not cover them completely, as they require light for germination. Maintain a consistently moist environment and provide bottom heat, ideally around 70-75°F (21-24°C), to enhance germination rates. Germination may take several weeks to a few months. Once the seedlings have grown large enough to handle, they can be transplanted into individual pots or directly into your garden when they are well-established. Keep in mind that the resulting plants may not be identical to the parent Yakushima plant, as they may exhibit natural variation.
