Nemophila maculata, commonly known as the five-spot or baby blue eyes, is a charming and delicate annual wildflower native to California and the western United States. This petite plant typically reaches heights of 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 centimeters) and forms a low-spreading mound of lush, finely dissected foliage. What truly distinguishes it are its enchanting flowers, which feature striking sky-blue petals adorned with a prominent, dark purple or maroon spot at the base, hence the name five-spot. These dainty blossoms, usually about 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) in diameter, adorn the plant in profusion, creating a captivating carpet of blue with contrasting spots. Nemophila maculata is often used in wildflower gardens, rock gardens, or as a ground cover, where its delicate and cheerful appearance adds a touch of whimsy and natural beauty to the landscape. It s a favorite among gardeners and nature enthusiasts for its ability to attract pollinators like bees and butterflies while offering a serene and picturesque display in the garden.  Zones 3-11

Germination

To germinate Nemophila maculata seeds, commonly known as five-spot or baby blue eyes, follow these steps. Begin by preparing a seed-starting tray or small pots with a well-draining seed-starting mix. Scatter the seeds lightly on the surface of the soil, as they require light to germinate. Gently press the seeds into the soil, ensuring good seed-to-soil contact. Mist the soil surface with water to moisten it without disturbing the seeds. Cover the tray or pots with a clear plastic lid or plastic wrap to create a mini greenhouse effect, which helps maintain moisture and warmth. Place the seed tray or pots in a bright, indirect light location with temperatures around 60-70°F (15-21°C). Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Germination typically occurs within 10-14 days, and you will start to see tiny seedlings emerging. Once the seedlings have developed their first true leaves and are large enough to handle, they can be transplanted into their permanent outdoor location, spacing them about 6 inches (15 centimeters) apart. Nemophila maculata is relatively easy to grow from seed and rewards gardeners with its charming blue blooms.
