Description

Vaccinium myrsinites, commonly known as shiny blueberry or evergreen blueberry, is a delightful and distinctive shrub native to the southeastern United States. This low-growing, evergreen plant is characterized by its glossy, dark green leaves, which persist year-round, creating a lush and verdant ground cover. In the spring, it produces petite, urn-shaped, white to pale pink, bell-like flowers that give way to small, round, shiny blue berries. These berries are not only visually appealing but also edible, boasting a sweet and tangy flavor. The shiny blueberry is highly adapted to sandy, acidic soils and is well-suited to coastal environments, often found in sand dunes and pine flatwoods. It s a valuable species for wildlife, providing habitat and food for birds and small mammals. The evergreen foliage, dainty blossoms, and flavorful fruits make Vaccinium myrsinites a charming addition to gardens, particularly those focusing on native and edible plants, and it contributes to the natural beauty and biodiversity of its native range.  Zones 8-10

Germination

To germinate Vaccinium myrsinites seeds, you can follow these steps. First, to enhance germination, place the seeds in a bag with moist peat moss and refrigerate them for about 60 days to mimic a period of cold stratification. After this chilling period, sow the seeds in well-draining, acidic soil or a seed-starting mix, lightly pressing them into the surface. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Place the containers in a location with dappled or indirect sunlight. Germination may be slow, taking several weeks to months. Once the seedlings are sturdy enough to handle, they can be transplanted into acidic, well-drained soil in a garden or natural area, where the evergreen blueberry will thrive with its glossy leaves, pale pink blossoms, and shiny blue fruits, providing not only aesthetic appeal but also potential for edible berries and wildlife support.
